Event Details
What: The Open Government Community Summit Series is an inter-agency collaborative event hosted by a different agency each month. Several working groups have formed out of the previous workshop, and the focus for the final three workshops of 2010 is to actually build-- not just talk about-- the infrastructure (i.e. collective knowledge resources and standard operating procedures) necessary to sustain the open government community over the long haul.
This month's summit is generously hosted by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
Working Groups:
- Knowledge Management
- Tools and Open Source Software
- Open Gov Inspiration (marketing OpenGov and connecting it to a deeper purpose)
- Standards (Information/Security/Compliance/Enforcement)
When: Friday, September 24, 2010 from 12pm-3:30pm. We highly recommend you allow plenty of time to clear security.
Where: The closest metro station is Crystal City (Blue/Yellow Lines) with a 0.8-mile walk down Crystal Drive to the EPA. Alternatively, the 9S bus from Crystal City metro stops at the EPA Building. Parking is available in the building for a fee as well as on the street.
Remote participants will be able to contribute ideas and shape the in-person workshop before it takes place. By signing up as a remote participant, you will be invited to a conference call from 11am-12pm EST on September 24th. Final details will be emailed to you on September 20th.
Prior to the workshop, we are using GovLoop discussion forums; all participants will receive an invitation to those discussions on September 20th.
- Help the open government community organize and gain momentum.
- Demonstrate that creating a collaborative environment within an agency can be done with minimal resources (this is a no-frills workshop series).
- Share knowledge across agencies and between the public, private, and non-profit sectors to address questions and challenges that span multiple agencies. All questions/challenges will be chosen by the participants from the public sector.
- Ensure all great ideas from the workshop are documented online for those that cannot attend.
Participant Responsibilities:
- Be authentic. Come to share ideas.
- Take responsibility for your learning and the learning of those around you.
- Post great notes on the wiki. If your notes are not online, then they're not shared. If your ideas are not shared, then they're not changing the world :)
RSVP on this page by noon on September 22, 2010.
Please feel free to contact us at info@opengovplaybook.org. We look forward to your participation and continuing commitment.
Background Information
Through personal experience, we've learned that the best way to understand collaboration is to experience it. Standard conferences are great for networking, but they aren't very collaborative. This workshop series has been designed by volunteers from the open government community to fill that gap, providing an opportunity for federal managers to experience the latest online and in-person collaborative techniques so that they can build them into the workplace.
- Over 650 people from 50+ federal agencies have participated in this workshop series since Nov '09.
- The previous six workshops have been hosted by the US Department of Transportation, the US General Services Administration, the US Treasury, and the US Department of Agriculture. The archived notes, video, and slides from all previous workshops are available here.
- Coverage on Twitter will be through the #opengov.
